How To Place A Halter on Your Horse

A halter is a type of headgear which you can place on your horse. It will fit over the neck, and will lie behind the ears while surrounding the muzzle. When the owner pulls on the muzzle portion of the halter the horse will move towards them. A halter doesn't have a bit which needs to be placed in the horses mouth.

Before putting on the halter, the first thing you want to do is make sure that it is unbuckled and the rope is attached. Inspect both the halter and rope to make sure they are not worn. When you make your way towards your horse you want to make sure he can see you. Approach them from the front. Be careful not to walk directly towards the horse in case it decides to dash forward. You should never approach the horse from behind, as they can kick or jump if they become afraid.

Move to the left side of the horse, and pass the rope under his neck using your left hand. Grab the rope from the other side using your right hand above his neck. After this you want to place both ends of the rope in your right hand to stop the horse from moving away. After this you want to place the ropes in your left hand, and grab both sides of the halter. Take the noseband and place it around the nose of the horse.

After this you want to take the strap of the halter and place it over the head and behind the ears. Attach the buckle while making sure you hold on to the rope so that the horse doesn't move away from you. You don't want to the horse to move away before you've had a chance to fully attach the halter. You want to make sure that the halter is not placed on the horse too tight or too loose. To make sure it is is pefect you should be able to place one or two fingers between the cheek and noseband. If you cannot this means it is too tight and you should loosen it.

After doing this you can take off the lead rope from around the horse's neck. You should now be able to guide him. Halters are important for situations where you want to have strict control over the movements of your horse. If you are at a show or event, you don't want your horse running off. This could endanger others. By using a halter you can keep your horse under control.
