What Is Horsemanship?

Many people are familiar with the term horsemanship, but even many owners of horses don't understand what it means. When the term is used in the show ring, it is used to demonstrate the ability of the rider to execute moves and techniques with their horse. These movements and techniques are evaluated by judges, and those owners which can execute movements with the most ease are awarded high scores.

With horsmanship, it is important to have control and balance. Both the horse and rider will need to maintain precision throughout their entire performance, and both should work in harmony with each other. Sportsmanship is important as well, and most modern competitions are done for presentation purposes.

When the term horsemanship is used in everyday language, it typically refers to a horse which is well groomed, and a rider who is dressed in clean and quality clothing. To many horse owners, having a well groomed horse in the barn is just as important as having a horse which is well groomed in the show ring.

How well your horse is trained is an important part of horsemanship. Does your horse move gracefully? Do they have a good temperament? Do they respond to your commands? Horses owned by people who have these attributes are said to have good horsemanship. If you keep your horse at home, how you care for them and the barn is also important.

When you work with your horse you want to show good horsemanship, and there are a few things you can do to achieve this. The first thing you want to do is be safe at all times. Caring for your horse in a safe manner is very important. The second important thing is to make sure you have the best interests of your horse in mind at all times. Good horse trainers don't treat their horses as just pets, but companions as well. By doing this you will demonstrate good horsemanship.

Knowing how far to push your horse is also important. A good horse owner understands the limits of the horse, and they know when these limits have been reached. You always want to make sure that your horse is better after you trained them than they were before. Start with simple techniques before moving on to more advanced things. If you find yourself becoming frustrated, stop and take a break. You will feel better when you start again. This is what horsemanship is all about.
